Warminster Highbury under 14 girls made the long trip to Highworth this morning for a 10.30 start. As with the season so far Highbury only had 7 players due to illness, injury etc. Highworth decided they would play with 9 players which annoyed the girls, I told them to take that into the game.
Both teams started brightly as Highbury started with Abi D in goal. A defence of Abi S, Evie & Izzy, a midfield of Bex & Kacey and Ash up front. Due to the numerical difference Highbury were getting over ran in midfield at times but Ash was working backwards well to cover that. The game was one of very little Chances but it was Highworth who struck the first blow as a well struck shot was brilliantly saved by Abi but they had an attacker who looked in an off side position to stick in the rebound goal given 1-0. Highbury continued to pass the ball around nicely but couldn’t find that final ball, but one such attack resulted in them being hit on the break and Evie got the wrong side and looked to have won the ball but penalty given. Abi looked confident as the striker stepped up, she went down really early but stuck up her hand to flick the ball over the bar, great save. Ash had one more opportunity as she shuffled past a few defenders and as she rounded the keeper the keeper knocked her off balance nothing given. Highbury saw it out til half time 1-0
There was not much I could say at half time as the girls were playing well, I gave a few pointers and they went out for the second half.
The second half started as the first half neither side finding that final ball, but Eventually Highworth doubled there lead as there winger rounded the defence before finding the bottom corner 2-0. Still Highbury felt they wernt out of this game and pressed forward, a well worked move saw Bex free down the side and as she squared it Ash swung her left foot at it but missed, this confused the defence and she found the bottom corner with the outside of her right 1-2 game on. Highburys tails were up and pressed high up the pitch to find the equaliser, as the game was into the last 10 mins I moved Evie further up the pitch to help craft out a second but doing so left a hole at the back and unfortunately a header from Highworth defender put there attacker through and she finished 1-3 game over.
Massive credit to my girls who I have named Highbury lionesses as they stick together, fight with everything they have and never give up. Izzy was the woman of the match for her willingness to play out of position, for her gutsy performance and for her all round play.
In all honesty I was dissapointed with Highworths coaches they had 14 players but were far to intent on winning by playing a full team, capped off when all of the coaches said they were glad we didbt turn up with a full team as they would have lost. I asked the girls if we were in same situation what would you have wanted to do and they all said match the numbers, as it’s no fun otherwise. Just shows that Highbury as a club is teaching more than football and I am immensely proud of my lionesses and there ethic.
